Multi-variant bills of materials

<< Prev   Next >>

If your company manufactures a product with multiple variants, there's no need to create a separate bill of materials (BOM) for each variant. Instead, you can create a single rule-based BOM that stores the components and quantities required to manufacture each variant of the product.

For example, a BOM that specifies 100 ml of black paint for a black table, 150 ml of yellow paint for a yellow table, and so on.

1C:Drive supports the following operations with multi-variant BOMs:

You can examine an illustrated example of creating a multi-variant BOM.

Creating multi-variant bills of materials

To create a multi-variant BOM:

  1. Go to Production. Then, under Catalogs, click Bills of materials.
  2. Click Create.
  3. Select a Finished product that has variants.
  4. Select the Advanced settings checkbox.
  5. Optional: Create component autofill rules if you want to define which components are required to manufacture which product variant.
  6. Optional: Create component quantity formulas if you want to specify variable quantities of components.
  7. Fill in or edit the remaining fields as described in BOM creation guide.
  8. Click Save and close.

Creating component autofill rules

Component autofill rules determine which components are required to produce which variant of a product.

For example, producing a white shirt requires white fabric and black buttons, while a black shirt requires black fabric and white buttons.

To create a component autofill rule:

  1. On the Components tab, click Add, then click Component autofill rules.
  2. In the Component autofill rule window, click Add.
  3. In the Attributes of finished product field, click select.png
  4. Specify rule conditions to define a product variant or set of variants.

To do this, in the Attributes of finished product field, click Add and define one or several conditions based on the product's additional attributes, such as "Product color is Red" or "Product size is S or M". When done, click Save and close.

  5. In the Component field, specify a component.
  6. Specify component variant to use when the conditions are met.

To do this, click the Variant search rule field and choose one of the following options:

    • By component additional attributes. Select this if you want the component to have the same value of a selected additional attribute as the product.

Example: If you select this option and then specify Color, the rule will always select a component of the same color as the product (white fabric for a white shirt, red fabric for a red shirt, and so on).

Note. You can only select an additional attribute that is common for the product and the component. For example, if your product has the Color attribute but your component has not, you cannot specify Color for this option.

    • By component variants. Select this if you want to use a specific component variant for the product variant.

Example: If you select this and then specify Square, the rule will always select a component of square shape for this product variant (square buttons for red shirt).

  7. Specify quantity of the component variant to use when the conditions are met.

You can either enter a fixed value or create a formula that calculates the required component quantity based on variable factors.

  8. Optional: Fill in the remaining fields as necessary.
  9. Optional: Click Rule validity check to make sure that your rule specifies components for each variant of the finished product.

If rules for some variants of the finished product are missing, you will get an error message. Change the rules accordingly and try again.

  10. After passing the rule validity check, click Save and close.

Note. Creating component autofill rules is optional. You can specify a component instead, and then create a component quantity formula for that component.

Example: When manufacturing shirts, you may choose to always use the same round black buttons regardless of the shirt variant, but the quantity of buttons varies depending on the shirt variant.

Editing component autofill rules

To edit a component autofill rule:

  1. On the Components tab, click a component line.
  2. Click Component autofill rules.
  3. Edit the autofill rule in the same way as when you create it. For details, see Creating component autofill rules.
  4. Click Save and close.

Creating component quantity formulas

Component quantity formulas determine the required component quantities based on variable factors.

For example, producing XL-sized shirts requires 2 m2 of fabric per shirt, while producing S-sized shirts requires only 1.7 m2 of fabric per shirt.

To create a component quantity formula:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • To create a formula for an existing component, on the Components tab, click a component line that does not contain a formula; then, click Component autofill rules.
    • To create a formula for a new component, on the Components tab, click Add; then, specify a component or create a component autofill rule.
  2. Click Component quantity formula.
  3. In the Formula field, enter the formula using:
    • Additional attributes and variables from the Available attributes list below.

Note. The list content may vary. For example, if the finished product has any additional attributes of Number type, they will be displayed in the list.

    • Logical and arithmetic operators from the Operators list below.

For example, a formula for XL-sized shirts requiring 2 m2 of fabric per shirt looks like this:

      • [OrderedQuantity] * 2
  4. Optional: Click Check formula to make sure that your formula is correct.

If the formula contains any errors, you will get an error message. Change the formula accordingly and try again.

  5. Click OK.

Note. Creating component quantity formulas is optional. You can specify a fixed number instead.

Example: When manufacturing shirts, you may choose to use buttons of different colors and shapes for different shirt variants, but the quantity of buttons is always the same regardless of the shirt variant.

Editing component quantity formulas

To edit a component quantity formula:

  1. On the Components tab, click a component line.
  2. Click Component autofill rules.
  3. In the Component autofill rule window, click a rule line.
  4. Click Component quantity formula.
  5. Edit the formula in the same way as when you create it. For details, see Creating component quantity formulas<.
  6. Click Save and close.
