Components tab

The Components tab of a bill of materials contains the list of components to be consumed during production or assembly, or to be created during disassembly.

To learn about the Components tab fields, see the following table:

Field Description
# The component's line number.
Line type A component's source. One of the following:
  • Material. A company's own material.
  • Third party material. A material received from the third party.
Component A component name or short description.

The list of components is based on the Products catalog. The list includes only products of Inventory type.

Goods for sale Indicates that a component is an inventory item charged to the customer's expense when a work order is completed.

Select this checkbox if Finished product is a product with Work type. Then you will be able to quickly populate a work order's Goods for sale tab with this BOM component.

Variant A component characteristic such as color or size.

You can specify a variant if Accounting by variants applies to the product.

The variant list is based on the Product variants catalog.

Quantity The quantity of components that a product is manufactured from or disassembled to. This quantity is relative to the specified quantity of the finished product. For instance, a BOM includes the finished product quantity of 100 and a component's quantity of 1000. This means that:
  • 1000 components are required to manufacture 100 products.
  • 1000 components come from disassembly of 100 products.

This quantity of components is required for calculating the quantity of components in BOM-based production orders, work-in-progress and production documents.

Unit

A component's unit of measure.

It is populated with the base unit from the component card. You can select another unit if the component has additional units.

Calculation method A method for calculating the quantity of components or operations required to produce the specified quantity of finished product units.
One of the following:
  • Proportional. Indicates that the quantity of consumed components is calculated in exact proportion to the quantity specified in BOM.
Example: 1 kg of peaches is required to produce 1 kg of peach jam. Then, 1.7 kg of peaches is required to produce 1.7 kg of peach jam.
  • Multiplier. Indicates that the quantity of components actually consumed is calculated as the nearest greater multiple of the quantity specified in BOM.
Example: 1 kg of peaches is required to produce 1 kg of peach jam. Then, 2 kg of peaches is required to produce 1.7 kg of peach jam.
  • Fixed. Only applies to operations. Indicates that the quantity of operations used to manufacture the product is fixed regardless of the quantity of resulting product.
Example: 1 mixing operation is required to produce 1 kg of peach jam. Then, 1 mixing operation is required to produce 1.7 kg of peach jam.
The resulting quanitites are filled in when you populate a work-in-progress or production document from BOM.
Normal scrap % Percentage of the component quantity that is wasted during production.

To compensate for this waste, the component quantity is automatically increased by this percentage whenever a production-related document is filled from this BOM.

For example, if a BOM states that painting a stool requires 200 ml of paint and Normal scrap % is set to 5%, all production orders populated from this BOM require 210 ml of paint per stool.

This field is only available if Normal scrap % is enabled in BOM settings (More actions > Change form).

Operation An operation that consumes or creates the component.

It is available if the process type is set to Production in the general details.

The list of operations is based on the BOM's Operations tab.

Produce Indicates that a component needs to be manufactured before it can be consumed.

The checkbox is automatically selected if a component has its own single BOM with status Active and validity period within the validity period of this BOM.

This field is only available if the process type is set to Production in the general details.

Bill of materials A component's BOM.

You can specify it if the Produce checkbox is selected.

A component's BOM is automatically populated if the component has its own single BOM with status Active and validity period within the validity period of this BOM.

This field is only available if the process type is set to Production in the general details.

Cost share A component's cost share in the cost of the disassembled product.

It is required for production documents to correctly calculate the cost of the components produced during disassembly.

This field is only available if the process type is set to Disassembly in the general details.
