Master plans

<< Prev   Next >>

Here you will learn how to set up the planning subsystem to generate master plans at the enterprise level and analyze the data comparability.

All planning iterations usually have a single master plan scenario if the enterprise follows the rolling planning methodology. Each new planning iteration can revise (replace) plan values within the horizon of the previous planning process or create new values for a new planning horizon.

Master plans include almost all plan profiles. Master plans are filled only with final (approved) versions of local plans. When you transfer information from local plans to a master plan, consolidation by dimensions (up to the enterprise level) and by periods (master plans often use the Month period) can occur.

The goods stock plan is usually calculated as follows: Goods stock plan at the beginning of the planning period + Supply plans (production, kitting, purchase) - Demand plans (sales, inventory consumption, production, reverse kitting).

With special reports, you can control the master plan balance.

Note that here you will not find out how to set up master sales forecasts and purchase plans to calculate financial plans.

Sales & operations planning scenarios catalog: master plans

Here you can create and set up scenarios for master plans.

Set up additional production planning options: calculation of semi-finished products, calculation of demand for materials, work center types, and labor resources by business units.

How to create a planning scenario

1. Open the catalog, click Create, and click the Main tab.

2. Specify the Description.

3. Select Time fence: Month.

4. Select the Display period option: Range of dates or Period number.

5. Next to Purchasing planning, select Only by quantity. Next to Sales forecasting, select Only by quantity.

6. Select the Calculation of demand for materials, work center types, and human resources check box. Select how to calculate the demand for materials. Select the business Calendar to use.

Note

If the Calculation of demand for materials, work center types, and human resources check box is selected, the system will automatically calculate the demand for resources when you post a production plan. The data will be taken from the product bill of materials.
There are the following calculation strategies: Optimistic, Pessimistic, and Most likely. The selected strategy is applied by default. If necessary, you can change it directly in the production plan document.
Dates of demand for products, semi-finished products, materials, work center types, and human resources are calculated in accordance with the enterprise schedule. If the calendar is not specified in the planning scenario, the main enterprise calendar is used to calculate the dates of demand.

7. Click the Details tab and add a detailed description of this scenario, assumptions, and combinations of external and internal factors of events.

8. Click the Plan structure tab and then click Create step. Specify the description and select the Demand planning option. Create two more steps with the Supply planning and Goods stock plan options selected.

Plan profiles catalog: production plan

Here you can create and set up production plan profiles to store master production plans.

You can also set up getting final versions of local supply plans.

In this plan, the Period field is used as a production start date.

You can also plan the demand for production resources:

  • Production capacities (load of work center types)
  • Human resources
  • Materials

Demand for production resources is calculated as follows: bills of materials that contain the standard production period and consumption of all types of resources are applied to the products. Companies usually create separate bills of materials only for medium-term inventory planning. They usually contain items without specific technical requirements (characteristics).

Plan profiles catalog: purchase plan

Here you can create and set up purchase plan profiles as supply plans.

Purchase plans include materials, works (including subcontracting), and services. Purchase plans cover almost all functional units of the enterprise. Therefore, they get data from sales forecasts, inventory consumption plans, kitting schedules, production plans, and other sources.

You can also set up getting data for better planning. There are multiple ways to generate a purchase plan. We will take a look at the following example:

  1. Copy the information from different demand plans filtered by only those items that are usually purchased from the supplier. This does not cover the process of eliminating remaining materials and components in a warehouse. However, you can set this up using the above approach to eliminate sales forecasts for the goods stock quantity.
  2. Offset the time period to the standard purchase period. Unlike the supply demand, the purchase order date is used in this case.
  3. Adjust data manually to make the purchase plan realistic in the short term.

Depending on how purchase plans are created at the enterprise (by chief procurement officers, by warehouses, or by the entire enterprise), dimensions can be both in the header and in the table of the plan document.

You can also break down purchase plans by vendors to correctly record standard delivery dates depending on the distance, speed, and method of delivery.

Plan profiles catalog: goods stock plan

Here you can create and set up goods stock plans to calculate master goods stock plans for both manufactured products and materials/components.

To calculate a goods stock plan:

  1. Take a goods stock plan at the beginning of the planning period.
  2. Add Supply (goods receipt) plans.
  3. Remove Demand (goods consumption) plans.

With this approach, a separate plan document is created for each warehouse.

Below you will see how to set up getting such data automatically.
