Sales invoice overview
A sales invoice is a document that a company issues to a customer to record a sales transaction and request payment.
The document can have the following types:
| Invoice type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Invoice | Register an invoice issued to a customer for products already shipped to them. |
| Advance invoice | Register an advance invoice issued to a customer for the products ordered by the customer but not yet shipped to them. |
| Zero invoice | Register an invoice with zero amount. This applies when a company needs to issue invoices under an agreement even though services or goods have not been provided during a period. It is only available if the Add a zero invoice type checkbox is selected in Settings > Sales. |
| Closing invoice | Register a closing invoice that adjusts the variance between the services invoiced and the services actually provided within the agreed period. This applies to services a company provides regularly under an agreement. It is only available if the Issue closing invoices checkbox is selected in Settings > Sales. |
A sales invoice can be used in the following processes:
| Process | Document purpose |
|---|---|
| Quote-to-cash | Record an invoice for the sale of goods owned by the company. |
| Consignment sale process for consignee | Record an invoice for the sale of consigned goods owned by a third party. |
After posting a sales invoice, a company's balances, such as accounts receivable or stock level, are adjusted depending on whether the goods were shipped before the invoice. For details, see Shipping goods and processing sales invoices.
